Dinner - Lecture

By: Peter Z. Mantarakis

Peter is author of Tears of the People, which is Tears of the People, a book about the life of Theophilos Kairis, a Greek revolutionary from Andros who plotted to free Greece in 1821 from the 400-year oppression by the Ottomans. Theophilos Kairis was a priest but also a renowned educator, philosopher and a recipient of his country’s Medal of Honor. During the Greek War of Independence in the early 1800s, he was an inspirational hero to the freedom fighters and populace alike.

Mr. Mantarakis lives in Pasadena, California.

Dr. Vasili Berdoukas, is an international expert on thalassemia and related disorders will present information on the condition,  how it is inherited and prevented. He graduated from the School of Medicine, University of Sydney in 1971.

“The Spiritual Tradition of Desert Monasticism
at St. Catherine's Monastery in the Sinai”
Co-sponsored by the UCLA Center for the Study of Religion and the UCLA Department of History

Elder Pavlos is the senior monk and elder ascetic  of Saint Catherine's Monastery at  Mount Sinai, Egypt, the oldest Christian  monastery in continuous existence. A 1972  graduate of the School of Theology of the  University of Athens, Elder Pavlos is a desert  ascetic himself with four decades of immersion  in the tradition of desert asceticism  that reaches back to the foundational period  of early Christianity.
