Lecture by Dr. Matthew Dillon, Professor of Classics at Loyola Marymount University.

He will try to answer the following questions: Why don't Classical Scholars pronounce Ancient Greek in the same way as Modern Greek? How do we know what Ancient Greek sounded like? How and when did the sounds change?

In his presentation, Prof. Dillon will focus on the role of Erasmus, the great Renaissance Humanist, who is usually credited (or blamed!) for "reforming" the pronunciation of Ancient Greek. Dr. Dillon will reassess the recommendations of Erasmus in an attempt to show that, despite the differences, the pronunciation of Ancient Greek must be based on
a knowledge of Modern Greek.

He will be speaking at the Basil P. Caloyeras Center of Modern Greek Studies at Loyola Marymount
University in Los Angeles, CA 

Topic: The New Aghia Sophia and Hagia Eirene Museum planned for the Washington D.C. area.

A non-for-profit Charitable Trust-Fund was established in May 2001 in order to facilitate the building of this museum, which gets its inspiration from the famous Hagia Sophia and Hagia Eirene churches presently located in Istanbul, Turkey and built during the 6th century by the Roman Emperor Justinian I.
